-a brief note from Dr. C’s desk! J
I have wanted to be a veterinarian since I was very young. The minute I learned you could have a career helping animals, I was on board! As I grew, I was convinced I was born to be a veterinarian and I assumed that this meant I would develop the unique ability to talk to animals!...
…Unfortunately, I am still waiting on my dream to come true! This being a problem for most people, a very frequent question I get from pet owners is:
“How do I know if my pet is in pain?”
What a fantastic question!
Since pets don’t tend to speak English, we have to look for other common signs that may indicate pain or discomfort. Dogs may try their best to vocalize to you through whimpering, moaning or barking. They may have behavioral changes such as aggression or hiding in strange places. You may notice they seem to walk differently with a head-bob or they may seem stiff. They may hold their head or tail down or arch their back in awkward positions. They also may lick or chew at their legs or body. Cats can show similar signs, along with hissing, crying, spitting or even purring! You may notice dilated pupils or changes in appetite. A cat that has recently started hiding is a cat that needs to have a good thorough physical exam from yours truly!
When in doubt, we are just a phone call away and are happy to discuss whether or not your pet needs to be seen!
I promise to continue to diligently work on my communication skills with your pet and together we can do our very best to keep them happy and pain-free!
